Samuel Bianchini donnera une conférence intitulée“Experiencing Robotics Through Contemporary Art” au Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), le mercredi 22 avril à 18h00.
Cette intervention s’inscrit dans le cadre des recherches menées autour de l’ouvrage à paraître Behavioral Objects, Behavioral Matter - Rethinking Robotics Through Contemporary Art: An Atlas, coécrit avec l’historien de l’art et du design Emanuele Quinz et publié ce printemps chez Spector Books. Ce livre est le fruit de plus de douze années de recherche consacrées aux « Behavioral Objects », impliquant non seulement le groupe de recherche en art et design Reflective Interaction dirigé par Samuel Bianchini, mais aussi de nombreux partenaires issus de disciplines variées : philosophie, robotique, sciences informatiques (IA), sciences cognitives, anthropologie et sciences des matériaux.
Les « Behavioral Objects » sont des objets robotiques artistiques et de design dont les mouvements tendent à démontrer des comportements. Non figuratifs, ces objets n’ont pas besoin d’être utiles : leur activité ne répond à aucune fonction ni usage spécifique. Dès lors, pourquoi un objet se met-il en mouvement s’il n’a pas de tâche à accomplir ? Et comment se déplace-t-il si son pouvoir d’action (son agency) provient de lui-même ? Comment concevoir ces formes d’agency et d’animacy en contradiction avec la condition première de ces objets ? Comment créer des œuvres intégrant de plus en plus la robotique souple et les matériaux intelligents ? Enfin, comment construire une relation émotionnelle et réflexive avec ces objets robotiques à travers une dimension esthétique en action ?
En s’appuyant sur les travaux réalisés pour cet ouvrage ainsi que sur la présentation de plusieurs œuvres robotiques — dont certaines développées par Samuel Bianchini dans le cadre de ce champ de recherche — cette conférence proposera des éléments de réponse à ces questions à travers une approche de recherche par la pratique.
Parmi les projets associés, REESPIRATION, dirigé par Samuel Bianchini, a été présenté à l’Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière à Paris entre janvier et juin 2025.

Samuel Bianchini will give a lecture entitled“Experiencing Robotics Through Contemporary Art” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM) on Wednesday, April 22 at 6PM.
This talk is part of the research conducted for the forthcoming book Behavioral Objects, Behavioral Matter - Rethinking Robotics Through Contemporary Art: An Atlas, co-authored with art and design historian Emanuele Quinz and to be published this spring by Spector Books. The book is the result of more than twelve years of research dedicated to “Behavioral Objects,” involving not only the art and design research group Reflective Interaction led by Samuel Bianchini, but also numerous partners from various disciplines: philosophy, robotics, computer science (AI), cognitive science, anthropology, and material science.
“Behavioral Objects” are robotic art and design objects whose movements tend to demonstrate behaviors. Non-figurative, these objects do not need to be useful: their activity has no specific function or use. So why would an object move if it has no task to accomplish? And how does it move if its power of action (its agency) comes from within? How can these forms of agency and animacy be designed in contradiction with the primary condition of these objects? How can works be created that increasingly incorporate soft robotics and smart materials? Finally, how can an emotional and reflective relationship be built with these robotic objects through an aesthetic dimension in operation?
Drawing on the work developed for the book, as well as the presentation of several robotic artworks — including some created by Samuel Bianchini within this field of research — this lecture will provide elements of response to these questions through a practice-based research approach.
Among the related projects, REESPIRATION, directed by Samuel Bianchini, was presented at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris between January and June 2025.
