Publication – Towards a bacterially-induced textile architecture ? – UIA World Congress of Architects 2023

The visual essay “Towards a bacterially-induced textile architecture” co-written by Aurélie Mosse, Daniel Suarez Zamora and Bastian Beyer has just been released as one of the post-extractives visions featured in the Design for rethinking Resources volume edited by Mette Ramsaard Thomsen, Carlo Ratti and Martin Tamke. The book is part of the six-volumes series of proceedings from the Science Track panels of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 CPH published by Springer Nature under their Sustainable Development Goals series.

 

This essay, available here : https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-36554-6_5, reflects on the results of a curriculum-based workshop focused on the biocalcification of textiles, a rigidification process informed by the bacterially induced precipitation of calcite developped in the framework of the Matérialités futures’ course led in 2022 by Aurélie Mosse, co-head of the Soft Matters research group for 1st year MA students in textile & material design from Ecole des Arts Déco, together with the cluster Matters of Activity, Humboldt University with the support of Soletanche Bachy and the I-Portunus programme.
